As Chilton continues to juggle two highly competitive race series, it was the British Touring Cars that came to the fore at the weekend with 3 frantic races full of drama for the Power Maxed Racing driver.
In qualifying Tom managed P12 in a tight field, with a time just 0.443 seconds off the pole sitter, Rob Austin. Sadly Race 1 was a DNF under grey skies and cold air. Chilton made it through a packed turn 1 and went onto have a long battle that came to a head on lap 5 when Smiley shunted Chilton, ending both of their races.
Race 2 was a 10th place finish for Chilton after starting back in 28th, he was on a different level from the start as he charged through the field to put in a performance that he’ll remember for a long time, passing car after car, eventually making up 18 places in 16 laps to cross the line in 10th place after a remarkable fight-back.
Race 3 was P14 for Chilton in race that saw rain come down as the drivers headed towards the gird. The race got underway in terrible conditions but was stopped on lap 1 when many cars left the track. Following a delay to let the clouds clear, the race restarted without incident, with Chilton rounding out the weekend with a 15th place.
Speaking after Race 3, Chilton commented:
“It has been a very physical weekend, in the true BTCC style, I don’t think there is a straight panel left of the car. Race 1 is one to forget, however, race 2 was mega. I loved cutting my way through the field, the car felt great, and it was a welcome return to the good old BTCC. Race 3 was a big learning curve: we put different set ups on each car. The good news is we found a set-up that works in the wet; the bad news is it was not on my car. Still, I bagged a critical 8 points which aren’t bad a consolation. Race 2 was my second best race ever in terms of overtakes, my best performance was also in a Vauxhall Astra many years ago”.
Next up is back to the World Touring Cars on the 29th and 30th April in Italy.
