Tom Chilton enjoyed a solid start to the 2016 WTCC campaign as he embarks on a busy year of both BTCC and WTCC.
The WTCC calendar got underway in Morocco to kick off Tom’s second season with Sebastian Loeb Racing and he looked immediately comfortable in the Citroën C-Elysée. Running at the sharp end of the field all weekend, Chilton was quick in qualifying and the races. He collected a podium and then a victory in the WTCC Trophy, settling into a strong position at the top end of the leaderboard on equal points with Mehdi Bennani. Speaking after the race, Chilton commented:
“Starting a championship on a road course, like that of Marrakech, is always a big unknown, you are constantly aware of being pushed into the wall. Luckily, I didn’t have a problem this weekend. I finished the first race with a good third place, in the main race, in addition to a Top 5 overall, I scored maximum points in WTCC Trophy to take a lead into the next round in Italy. The car has evolved considerably since last year with intensive work done by the team on the chassis. The next race offers a different challenge, which should be favorable to the Citroën C-Elysée."
After a positive start, Tom and Sebastian Loeb Racing move onto Italy leading the WTCC standings and can look ahead with confidence to the rest of the season. Before that, it’s back to BTCC action for Chilton at Donington Park on the 15th and 16th April. Qualifying is 15:40 on Saturday, Race 1 at 11:40 on Sunday, Race 2 at 14:37 and Race 3 at 17:22.
